Florence Court – a National Trust property

If you want to visit a stately home whilst you’re here, then we highly recommend a trip to Florence Court. This is a fabulous National Trust property, situated near the Marble Arch Caves. The view over to the Stairway to heaven might even tempt you to tackle the boardwalk too . Head out after a good breakfast and you’ll be there in plenty of time to take it all in. It’s worth spending the whole day and we’re always happy to provide a picnic for your day out.

Florence Court takes its name from the wife of the first Earl of Enniskillen, a lady called Florence Bourchier Wray.  The estate has been in the family for over 250 years, and the house was built in the mid-18th century. Therefore it’s a great example of Georgian architecture. The guided tour is definitely worth doing, and the guides are very knowledgeable about the quirky bits. Some say there are ghosts too, but don’t take my word for it. For a visit to a stately home, you can’t go wrong here!

The house tour is just like stepping onto the set of Downton Abbey, with butler’s pantry, servants hall and wine cellar. For those who fancy the high life in a stately home, there is much to take your fancy upstairs too.

The gardens are extensive and include woodlands which offer delightful walks, cycling trails and bridle tracks. The walled garden consists of a fabulous array of fruit bushes, vegetable plots and a breathtaking swathe of flowers. Fortunately, there are often some for sale too. Not forgetting the recently restored glass house, which is also a thing of wonder!

There are also picnic areas and a coffee shop, so the whole family can enjoy a day out. If you want to fit a bit more into your day, you could head up the road to Marble Arch Caves. Here you could finish your day with some underground exploration after you’ve exhausted all that a visit to a stately home has to offer.

From mid April Florence Court is open daily, until then you can visit the house at weekends and the gardens every day. If you need a picnic to take with you, remember to order one from us when you arrive. It will be ready for you to collect from the kitchen after breakfast.
