Are you new to bed & breakfast?

If it’s your first time staying in a B&B you might not be sure how it all works, but fear not, it’s really easy! Many of our guests at Rossclare Lodge were new to B&Bs when they arrived, and we’re thrilled that they all left with wonderful memories.

So, let’s dive into the main differences between a cosy bed and breakfast like Rossclare Lodge and a typical hotel stay:

1. A Smaller, More Intimate Setting

Most B&Bs are smaller than hotels, which means fewer rooms and a cosier atmosphere. You won’t find amenities like pools or full bars at many B&Bs, but you’ll experience a much more personal touch and attention to detail.

2. Ensuite Bathrooms and Shared Options

Like most hotels, many B&Bs offer ensuite bathrooms, but some may have shared options, such as a Jack and Jill setup or a shared hallway bathroom. If having a private bathroom is essential for you, be sure to check before booking! At Rossclare Lodge, we have just three rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, for total privacy.

3. Check-In Times and Reception Style

In hotels, you’ll often find 24-hour reception. B&Bs, however, are usually owner-operated, so it’s a little different. Here at Rossclare Lodge, our check-in is from 4 PM to 8 PM, allowing us time to serve breakfast, clean up, and prep the rooms for new guests. We do offer early check-ins for a fee, but just let us know if you need this as we could be out doing the shopping if you turn up early. We can also arrange a late self check-in if you’ll be arriving after hours. If you’re expecting a late arrival, always reach out to make sure your host can accommodate it. We do need to get a good night’s sleep to be bright eyed and bushy tailed in the morning!

4. Room Servicing During Your Stay

In a hotel, there’s often daily housekeeping, but in a B&B, this might be a little different. For instance, at Rossclare Lodge, we tidy rooms and replace used cups each day, but we only launder towels and change linens after 3 nights to reduce our environmental footprint. If you need fresh towels sooner, just ask! Many B&Bs operate with minimal staff, so don’t hesitate to ask if you need anything.

5. Breakfast: A Personalized Experience

Breakfast is a highlight at any B&B! Unlike the bustling breakfast buffets you might find in hotels, breakfast at a B&B is often cooked to order. At Rossclare Lodge, we offer a daily breakfast menu that changes a few times each week, though our popular Ulster fry is always available. By choosing your breakfast the night before, you help us prepare everything fresh and just how you like it. We use locally sourced ingredients, including eggs from our own hens and homemade treats like pancakes, waffles, and French toast!

Guest Books & Reviews: How Your Feedback Makes a Difference

When staying at a bed and breakfast, you’ll often find a guest book waiting for you in the lobby or common area, and signing it is a lovely way to share your experience. At B&Bs, guest book comments are more than just notes—they provide encouragement and motivation for the owner and staff, reminding them that their hard work is appreciated.

Leaving an online review is also incredibly valuable, as it helps small, locally-run B&Bs like us get noticed by new guests searching for authentic, quality accommodations. A positive review can go a long way toward helping a bed and breakfast stand out, especially in a competitive market.

If you do have suggestions for improvement, most B&B owners are more than happy to hear them directly – we definitely are and have acted on a number of great ideas from our guests. Speaking with your host about any issues or ideas for improvement is often far more helpful than leaving impersonal public comments. B&B owners genuinely appreciate constructive feedback and love making your stay even better. So next time you stay in a B&B, consider sharing your thoughts, signing the guest book, or leaving a review—your feedback really makes a difference!

Staying at a B&B is a wonderfully different experience, offering warmth, personal service, and a sense of homeliness that’s hard to find in larger hotels. Whether it’s your first time in a bed and breakfast or your tenth, you’ll find that places like Rossclare Lodge bring a unique touch that makes every stay special.

So, if you haven’t booked yet, you know what to do next! We’re really looking forward to meeting you!
