Florence Court

It’s a mere 15 minute drive from Rossclare Lodge to Florence Court, a fabulous National Trust property , situated near the Marble Arch Caves, and the Cuilcagh boardwalk/ Stairway to heaven, and we thoroughly recommend a visit. Head out after a good breakfast and you’ll be there in plenty of time to take it all in. It’s worth spending the day if you have time.

Florence Court takes its name from the wife of the first Earl of Enniskillen, a lady called Florence Bourchier Wray.  The estate has been in the family for over 250 years, and the house was built in the mid-18th century and is a great example of Georgian architecture. The guided tour is definitely worth doing, if you want to find out more about it, and as usual the guides are very informed and knowledgeable about the little quirky bits. Some say there are ghosts too – but don’t take my word for it.

I loved the house tour – it was just like stepping onto the set of Downton Abbey, or for those of you of my generation, Upstairs, Downstairs, with the butler’s pantry, the servants hall and the wine cellar. I’m definitely a below stairs person, but for those of you who fancy the high life, there is much to take your fancy upstairs too.

The gardens are extensive and include woodlands which offer delightful walks, cycling trails and bridle tracks. My favourite spot is the walled garden. I really could spend all day there! Such a fabulous array of flowers, vegetables, shrubs and fruits, and often there are some for sale too.

There are picnic areas and a children’s playground, so the whole family can enjoy a day out, and if you want to fit a bit more into your day, you could head up the road to Marble Arch Caves after you’ve indulged yourself in the not-to-be-missed café!  I can definitely recommend the salted caramel brownies.

From 15th April Florence Court will be open daily, until then you can still visit the house at the weekends and the gardens every day. If you need a picnic to take with you, remember to order one from us when you arrive and it will be ready for you after breakfast.
